Silly little things

What gets “in the way” of your writing? What are some little things you find yourself doing or avoiding in stories?

For me, it’s character names. I have a small list of names, mostly from family, that I find I just can’t use in an erotic story for the main characters. For a minor one it might work, but I haven’t tried that yet. But I find I can’t use my kids’ names, my parents’ names, etc. Which makes it interesting when looking for character names. :)

I’ve often wondered where you authors come up with the names of your characters. I tease Monocle all the time about some of the bizarre names in his stories.

Mostly I pull mine out of thin air, or a name will lodge in my head for some reason. But if it’s too close to home, out it goes. I also can’t bring myself to use some of the more unusual spellings for names — I recently saw a story about a “Rileigh” and it took me a minute to figure out how to say it. I might do it if there was a point to it, but I guess I’m old fashioned. I keep it simple.
